Florida, Toilet Paper & Jewellery

I was in Florida a few weeks ago visiting my family. It was not a great trip, for several reasons, one of them being that my friend Pat passed away while I was down there.
While staying at my Mom's, it was hard not to notice this sitting on top of her toilet.

This roll of toilet paper is wrapped in lace sitting on a blue plastic lace- edged clam shell. I didn't get a shot of the top of this train wreck, but it is embellished with flowers and fake pearls.

I don't know if I had way too much time on my hands, or if I was trying to distract my way out of my grief.  Who knows. But I started thinking ..why do people dress up their toilet paper? It's just a plain white roll of paper.  Everyone uses it. We take it for granted, except when it's in short supply.

But do some people actually find it offensive, and feel the need  to cover it up?

Or do others look at it and think.."My god, the things I could do with this...."
Out of curiousity I did a search on ETSY to see if anyone made toilet paper covers and there were 89 listings.  I did a Google images search and  I hit the proverbial motherlode! Page after page of toilet paper covers. Here are some of my favorites!

But before you start wasting even more of your time then you already have, by reading this blog, click on the video to listen to some music while you're deciding on which one you want to give as a present when you're playing Secret Santa!

This video has nothing to do with toilet paper, clam shells, fake lace or Florida. Be patient. We are getting to the Florida part soon. And the jewellery.

I just like the song!!!

Train - Hey, Soul Sister (Official Music Video). Watch more top selected videos about: Trains

Here is one for all you Star Wars lovers. This one is from Japan.

Something for you cat lovers.....

How cute is that!!!

One for every holiday!!!

This one cracks me up. A skunk protecting your toilet paper....

This one is kind of  creepy...

This one looks like a corset!!!

Have you seen enough? Yeah, me too.

So we had a chance to visit the beach more than once.  It was very hot and humid. What a surprise- hot and humid in Florida during August.

Here is a picture of one of my favorite restaurants- Breakers right on the beach...

Great food and cold beer!! Here is a view of the beach from the front porch of Breakers.

Now this is odd. Or at least I think it is. We went out to dinner one night and ordered caesar salad and this came with it....

A cinnamon roll loaded with frosting sitting next to the salad. Is this some new dining trend I know nothing about? If you have seen this before I'd appreciate a comment. I'm not going to get into the calorie count right now, or the esthetics of it all.

Ok. I saved the best for last. Here are some pics of my latest listings. I call them woven. I have created hoops out of 14k gf wire and woven gold wire and stones around the hoops. I think they look spectacular!
This one is gold and sunstone...

These are made with gold and natural emeralds..

 Hope you like the earrings!!

Good bye Pat

A very dear friend of mine recently passed away from malignant melanoma. Pat was only 60 years old. She had just retired after teaching for 25+ years.  Here is the link to her obituary. Scroll down to read all the comments in her guestbook. It is touching to read all the accolades from the students she has taught over the years:

Pat was diagnosed with stage IV malignant melanoma in June, and she was dead by August 10.  We are all in shock over how quickly it was over. I am so sad and heartsick over the injustice of it all.  I just can't make sense of any of this. I was told it isn't going to make sense and to stop trying. But right now I can't.

A friend of mine told me to... "Try and find solace in the fact there are many around you alive and death is an unfortunate part of our world, our life.Think of the good times with her and smile. She would rather you do that."

I know he is trying to console me, and he is right, Pat would want us all to remember her and smile.  But right now there isn't much anyone can say to make me feel better. It's going to take time.  And I don't feel like smiling much.

I worked with Pat for over 22 years.  She was one of the most intelligent, caring, articulate women I have ever met.  She had class and grace.   We were co-ordinators together and shared good and not so many good times together. Anyone reading this who works with me will know what I am talking about.

Pat knew how to have a good time! I have so many memories of business trips out East, the fun times at dinners, lunches.  Many other memories as well. I can still hear her voice asking me if "I am doing ok?"

We had talked a fair bit during the past year about her upcoming retirement. I was so happy for her, listening to all the plans she was making. All the things she was going to do. I remember thinking how happy I was for her that she was retiring, yet I was also feeling sad,  thinking about how much I would miss her.

Then this happened.  The last time I saw Pat was at her retirement party. She knew her diagnosis then. We all knew. She was already feeling tired, had started losing weight. Yet she still wanted to come to her party to see all of us.   I spoke with her a bit about her daughter Sara, her family etc. We didn't talk about her cancer.  I left before she did and when I hugged her good-bye I kissed her.  I cried all the way home. That was the last time I saw Pat.

Here is a picture of me and Pat at the retirement party in June of this year:

Here is a picture of Pat taken in June 2007. Some of us went out to lunch after graduation.

Kyrie Eleison means "Lord have mercy on us." I am really not a religous person, so that is not  why I am posting the lyrics and the video to this song. I don't know if Pat liked this song or not but I do.  I find it sad but uplifting at the same time.

Kyrie Eleison

The wind blows hard against this mountainside
Across the sea into my soul
It reaches into where I cannot hide
Setting my feet upon the road
My heart is old it holds my memories
My body burns a gemlike flame
Somewhere between the soul and soft machine
Is where I find myself again

Kyrie Eleison
Down the road that I must travel
Kyrie Eleison
Through the darkness of the night

Kyrie Eleison
Where I'm going will you follow
Kyrie Eleison
On a highway in the light

When I was young I thought of growing old
Of what my life would mean to me
Would I have followed down my chosen road
Or only wished what I could be

Kyrie Eleison
Down the road that I must travel
Kyrie Eleison
Through the darkness of the night
Kyrie Eleison
Where I'm going will you follow
Kyrie Eleison
On a highway in the light

Kyrie Eleison
Down the road that I must travel
Kyrie Eleison
Through the darkness of the night
Kyrie Eleison
Where I'm going will you follow
Kyrie Eleison
On a highway in the light

I'm going to miss you Pat. xooxox

Hammer Time

I have just listed these sterling silver hammered hoops in my ETSY shop.

In an attempt to be witty I named them "Hammered".   Of course, right after I named them the infamous MC Hammer song  "Can't Touch This" came into my head. Just like my White Ice bracelet got me humming Ice Ice Baby for days on end.

While you are listening to MC and watching him jump around scroll down and take a look at some of my other new listings.  Enjoy!!!

Indigo Blue Bracelet- Goldstone and Sterling silver

These earrings are stunning!!!

You gotta love those parachute pants on MC!!! Now that was a trend that died a deserving death.
In case you were wondering if music inspires my designs the answer is not really. But music does inspire my choice of name for my creations!!

Ice Ice Baby- Vanilla Ice where are you now?

Check out this video of a live performance of Vanilla Ice. Remember him??

Here is Jim Carrey's version. Hilarious..

Ok. So you are asking what's the point of this. And how does this relate to jewellery.
Here is a bracelet I recently made. I call it White Ice. Of course right after I named this bracelet this song got stuck in my head.

Dangling from a sterling silver chain are funky lucite beads, sterling plated balls, lucite leaves and crystals.  It's very light weight and looks pretty sweet!!

Ok. Getting back to Vanilla Ice. If you want more info on him here is the link to his Wikipedia page:
He hasn't disappeared. Sounds like he's keeping busy. Here is an excerpt from his Wiki page:

"On April 10, 2008, Van Winkle was arrested in Palm Beach County on a battery charge for allegedly kicking and hitting his wife.[66] He was released the following day after she declared that her husband had only pushed her. In court, the couple's neighbor, Frank Morales, stated that it was merely a verbal argument.[66] Van Winkle was ordered by a Florida court to stay away from his wife following his arrest, and to communicate with his children only if Morales accompanied him. The judge told Van Winkle that he could only contact his wife via telephone.[66] On April 29, 2008, Van Winkle's lawyers, Bradford Cohen and Joseph LoRusso, were able to get the case dropped after providing the state attorney with evidence that conflicted with what was originally reported.[67]"

"In September 2008, Van Winkle signed a contract with Cleopatra Records, recording the cover album Vanilla Ice Is Back! at the label's request.[68] The album was released on November 4, 2008, and contained covers of songs by Public Enemy, House of Pain, Bob Marley and Cypress Hill. IGN reviewer Spence D. called the album "an embarrassing endeavor that sounds like it should have stayed locked inside Ice's studio (or at the very least leaked on YouTube and passed off as a piss take)."[69]

"On February 27, 2009, Van Winkle performed as part of a joint performance with MC Hammer in Orem, Utah.[70] In August 2009, Van Winkle announced on his official Twitter account that he had signed a contract with StandBy Records, who will release his sixth studio album.[71] Van Winkle is also filming a reality television series.[3]"

What's a piss take?? !! Is that like a mistake??   So there you have it. All you ever wanted to know, or not know about Vanilla Ice.

Hope you like the bracelet!!! :)
